Find intensity of transmitted light from the system assuming I0 be the intensity of polarised light obtained form the first polaroid.

23.Rashmi’s Grandfather was old. Due to some reasons doctor suggested him to go through an endoscopic tests. Grandfather had never gone through any such test ever before. So, he was afraid. He thought that these tests will cause negative effects to his body organs. Therefore, he was not ready for endoscopy. Everyone tried to let him understand and convince him. But, he got ready only when his granddaughter Rashmi convinced him and explained that it is nothing but just a test in which light wave is involved and possessing total internal reflection, which is used to view and observe the internal parts of the body.

24.Answer the following questions.
(i)You have learnt that plane and convex mirrors produce virtual images of objects. Can they produce real images under such circumstances? Explain.
(ii)A virtual image, we always say, cannot be caught on a screen. Yet when we see a virtual image, we are obviously bringing it on to the ‘screen’ (i.e. the retina) of our eye. Is there a contradiction?
(iii)A diver under water, looks obliquely at a fisherman standing on the bank of a lake. Would the fisherman look taller or shorter to the diver than what he actually is?
(iv)Does the apparent depth of a tank of water change if viewed obliquely? If so, does the apparent depth increase or decrease?
(v)The refractive index of diamond is much greater than that of ordinary glass. Is this fact of some use to a diamond cutter?

Sol.(i) For a semiconductor, energy gap is 1 eV.(ii) For an insulator, energy gap is 5 eV.
3.Which of the following waves can be polarised
(i)heat waves? (ii) sound waves?

Sol.Heat waves can be polarised, because heat waves are transverse waves whereas sound waves cannot be polarised because sound waves are longitudinal waves.
Transverse waves can oscillate in the direction perpendicular to the direction of its propagation but longitudinal waves like sound waves oscillate only along the direction of its propagation. So, longitudinal waves cannot be polarised
4.What is the advantage of using thick metallic strips to join wires in a potentiometer?
Sol.These metal strips have low resistance and need not be counted in the potentiometer length / of the null point. One measures only their lengths along the straight segments (of lengths 1 m each). This is easily done with the help of centimeter rulings or meter ruler and leads to accurate measurements.
5.Can an inverted telescope work as microscope?
Sol.No, for a telescope, the difference in focal length of the objective and eyepiece is large while in a microscope, the difference of focal lengths is smaller. Therefore, an inverted telescope cannot work as a microscope
